Major renovation of the Ruinen swimming pool

Ruinen Swimming Pool to Get a New Floor in Its 25-Meter Pool
Next season, visitors to the Ruinen Swimming Pool will be able to swim in a 25-meter pool with a new floor. To make this possible, a volunteer work crew has been working hard for weeks to remove the old tiles from the pool and the top layer of concrete. In total, this involves 500 square meters and nearly 20,000 tiles. The volunteer group will continue this arduous task through January 2024, but by doing the work themselves, they are saving Ruinen Swimming Pool approximately €20,000.
The maintenance group at Ruinen Swimming Pool consists of dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes every winter to carry out both major and minor projects aimed at improving the pool and making it more sustainable. Last winter, for example, the lifeguard tower was renovated. During the summer months, the maintenance group remains active, tending to the landscaping and performing technical maintenance. These technical facilities place a strong emphasis on sustainability and energy conservation.
Up-to-date service
In addition to all its other facilities, Zwembad Ruinen offers visitors modern amenities and a fun swimming experience at an affordable price. This is made possible by the ongoing dedication of many committed volunteers and our collaboration with local businesses. Under the inspiring leadership of the pool working group, they are active year-round, regardless of the weather. Thanks to the efforts of these volunteers, visitors to Zwembad Ruinen enjoy plenty of swimming fun every summer, with a new floor in the 25-meter pool coming this season.
Free lubrication prevents worse problems
To help prevent skin cancer, the outdoor swimming pool in Ruinen, Drenthe, is the first to provide free sunscreen. The Dutch Cancer Society is enthusiastic. “As far as I know, this is the first swimming pool in the Netherlands to do something like this.”

“Kids, in particular, tend to forget to bring it along. And anyone who gets badly sunburned has a higher risk of skin cancer. To help prevent that, we did some research and ended up choosing these dispensers,” says Roel Wiekema, chairman of the swimming club.
Mischa Stubenitsky of KWF Kankerbestrijding responds enthusiastically to the initiative. “That’s great. Swimming outdoors is often a ‘forgotten’ opportunity to soak up the sun. All in all, you can easily spend a couple of hours outside in the sun. It’s wonderful that this pool is taking responsibility.”
One of the pool volunteers led the project. Wiekema said, “He’d gotten sunburned a few times himself and really dug into the subject. Last year, on nice sunny days, we had about 1,300 visitors. There are always people among them who really benefit from the sunscreen.”
Wellness bath
Thanks to a generous contribution from Initiatiefrijk De Wolden, smooth cooperation with local business owners, and the tireless efforts of many volunteers, we’ve done it: we’re kicking off the 2019 swimming season with a wonderful addition to the offerings at Zwembad Ruinen. A wellness pool where you can swim laps in peace and quiet and enjoy massage jets and a neck shower. Next to the wellness pool is a quiet zone with comfortable loungers and hammocks.
New at Ruinen Swimming Pool: wellness pool and quiet zone
The beautiful, almost tropical summer of 2018 meant a wonderful and enjoyable swimming season for us, but the high number of visitors also made it clear that, in addition to space for recreation, the pool needed a place for relaxation and focus. Plans for an entirely new pool were therefore soon in the works: a pool for swimming laps, participating in our activities, or simply enjoying the heated water and additional wellness amenities. These were ambitious plans that could not be realized without support.
We would like to thank everyone who, directly or indirectly, helped make this fantastic project a reality. After all, Ruinen Swimming Pool is a family-friendly facility for both residents and visitors: by providing ample space for recreation, sports, and relaxation, everyone feels at home here.
